California Website Accessibility: A Practical Checklist

How do you begin an accessibility review on a business website?

Start with the customer tasks: reading services, using navigation, filling forms, and understanding confirmations. Test them without a mouse, at narrow widths, with zoom and with assistive technology. Automated scans help locate issues but do not establish compliance.

Accessibility is a technical and operational responsibility. Legal requirements differ by organization; this page does not offer legal advice or promise that a checklist alone establishes compliance.

01 / 03

Check keyboard operation and visible focus

Tab through the full site without a mouse. Menus should open and close with appropriate keyboard behavior; dialogs should not trap users unintentionally. Labels, heading order, and landmarks should make the page understandable outside its visual composition.

02 / 03

Measure contrast and reflow

Small gray labels and orange text on cream backgrounds often deserve scrutiny. Test actual WCAG contrast, 200% zoom, 320px widths, landscape orientation, and long text. Do not rely on color alone to convey validation states.

03 / 03

Test complete form journeys

Required fields need programmatically associated labels, instructions, and errors that are surfaced meaningfully. Test spam controls and submitted success feedback as well as failures. Multimedia and meaningful imagery need proper text alternatives.

BEFORE
YOU BUILD.

  • 01

Run a scanner and manual keyboard check.

  • 02

Test normal-text contrast at 4.5:1 for WCAG AA.

  • 03

Verify zoom, reflow, and mobile controls.

  • 04

Test form errors with an assistive technology user.

WATCH OUT FOR

An accessibility overlay cannot fix semantic markup, missing alternative text, or broken keyboard interaction everywhere.

GOOD
QUESTIONS.

Does WCAG AA guarantee legal protection?

No. Conformance targets are not a substitute for qualified legal advice or testing against the organization's obligations.

Do decorative images need long descriptions?

No. Purely decorative images can use empty alternative text; meaningful images need concise descriptions of their contribution.
